‘Cardassian One’ in today’s comic is a reference to Star Trek – specifically the notion that most geeks tend to name their computers after something Star Trek related. Spock, anyone? :)

I normally name my computers either after their function or unique name, my dell is happily called ‘Dell’ and my old G4 is now called ‘Myserver’. Tho my mabook pro is just nameless…

My naming conventions usually involve D&D.
One friend does Star Wars.
Another does various things, including, but not limited to, various layers of the Abyss, Winnie the Pooh, Babylon 5 and Smallville. I think there might be a couple of others.
However, when I set up a Mac for a friend, it did go Star Trek for him.
My machines are named to items/people/places from Moria, a friend of mine uses names from Mordor, and his brother uses names from Rivendel, all from Lord of the Rings ofcourse…
At my work we usually have names that phonetically spell their function… eg: our databaseserver is called eskuel…
I think we all have our strange little conventions… and the startrek series is a good start, right?
My network name for my MacBook Pro is “Utopia Planetia,” and my external drives are named “Wolf 359″ and “Sovereign” (Borg cube, and NCC-1701-E icons, respectively)

Mine is Al. Many years ago I had as a beep sound “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that” – from 2001. I don’t like the name Dave, but that was just too appropriate. I didn’t want to call my computer HAL, and Al went with my middle name, so that is what I called my computer.
Since I basically work as an engineer, I usually name mine Dilbert, Dogbert, Catbert, etc.It just seemed appropriate.
I initially named my drives after dead ’60s musicians: Hendrix, Garcia, Joplin, etc. then switched to Roman names like Maximus and Octavius…
I use a mix. My main drive is named The Nexus, since it ties my network together. I use a combination of sci fi, mythological, and fantasy references. My external drives are named after places in the D&D world of Greyhawk (Enstad). My backup computer is Gaia. My Airport Base station is Tovag Baragu (another Greyhawk reference). My flash drives are named after the ships in Stargate SG-! (Prometheus, Dedalus, and Odyessy).
Funny, how we like to personalize our machines. My sign off sound is Megatrons, “Wait . . . I still function!” from the animated Transformers movie :)
I get my computer names from different mythologies. I have a desktop named “Azazel”. One laptop is named Titania and the other is her husband Oberon. I did name the printers on my office lan after geographic areas: Sahara, Serengheti, etc.
At my work we have used 3 generations of names:
First: the planets: mercury, venus, earth, etc. But they were only nine and with growth we ran out of names.
Second: LOTR Lord of the Rings: Frodo, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf…..
As the third generation we are using Super heroes like Ironman, Aquaman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and so forth……
What will be next??? who knows…..

Altough I AM a geek and naming my computer after something from SF or Fantasy is something right up my alley, my current laptop has a quite different name.
I named my laptop (Guy) Fawkes, mainly after Guy Fawkes (I love Guy fawkes ever since seeing V for Vendetta) and also a litle after Fawkes from HP, But mainly after Guy Fawkes.
