Well! This is a common issue with the native Windows Backup program and all third party backup programs available!
I remember reading that it has to do with the space required for creating a temporary image in the Temp folder which is then simultaneously compressed in realtime to create the final backup file! So ideally unless you are aiming for an uncompressed backup, it is recommended that you have at least twice as much space free as is the size of the files you need to backup!
But this is Windows talk! I dunno if it applies to Mac OSX.
